"Finely choreographed and wonderfully danced, the sensual elegance of tango meets the creative freedom of contemporary dance – a beguiling symbiosis that also proves to be an excellent opportunity to question leadership roles and equality."
L. Harris, 24 hours world, April 2023
"What Rosalie Wanka brings to the stage of HochX theater with "Asymmetrical Encounters" is nothing less than a devil's ride! Tango meets twerking, Batman meets the federal eagle, Papageno meets Maya the Bee."
S. Leucht, Münchner Feuilleton, March 2021
"Situated right next to the dance floor, you were overwhelmed by the force and abundance of simultaneous stimuli from images, sound and the physical presence of the dancers."
V. Mlakar, AZ, March 2021
In ASYMMETRICAL ENCOUNTERS, tango becomes the motor of a contrasting codified typification of body image and gender by its opposition to contemporary dance.
In collaboration with the international cast - Rodrigo Pardo, Damian Cortes, Cecilia Loffredo, Marcela Lopez Leal - and the Munich media artist Manuela Hartel, oniric landscapes are showcased. Each performer develops his or her own subjective, biographical spaces. The audience finds itself transported into strange and yet familiar worlds. The main focus remains on the human abysses, which are to be illuminated and questioned with much humor about the possibility and impossibility of mutual understanding.
A series of encounters are staged in which different worlds collide. No clear attribution is possible, seemingly absurd constellations subtly question (gender) identities, prejudices and the legitimacy of one's own world view. In the end, is it always a misunderstanding that puts us in the position of miscommunication, or is it because of the narrow-mindedness with which one meets the other?
Projections by Manuela Hartel illustrate on a visual level the different worlds of association in which each performer moves. The fast-paced dance of the performers deals with the movement languages of contemporary dance and Argentine tango, with culturally influenced body images as well as with the interactions of language and physical self-image.
The basis for Assymetrical Encounters is fed by the upstream research project ENTANGLEMENTS - Gender and Interculturality, for which Rosalie Wanka was funded with a research grant from the Munich Department of Culture in 2019. Now, Wanka will deal with the results of this research on stage.
