Fragmentango is a musical and choreographic exploration of the various forms of tango, weaving through iconic works by Piazzolla and Gardel and lesser known female composers, while also delving into experimental compositions that seek to capture its essence and place it in a contemporary context, moving away from tradition.

Tango embodies a sense of communion, closeness, and the merging of two bodies into one. Yet, its roots in African, Creole, and European cultures reveal a history of fragmentation, with overlapping layers that influence its rhythms, melodies, and even the themes of its lyrics—often dealing with nostalgia, the longing for a distant homeland, or the sorrow of a broken heart.
It is from this leitmotif of fragmentation that the research opens up a vast field for experimentation at many levels: from musical and choreographic materials to intercultural aspects, and the various components of tango—such as poetry, lifestyle, historical mythology, and its mediatic/popular image. These elements will be isolated, combined, repeated, or discarded as part of the creative process.

Fragmentango does not aim for complete fidelity to the genre. Instead, the goal is to create a contrast between the cultural richness embedded in tango's layers and an open-minded approach that establishes its own set of rules: rules specific to this piece and shaped by the unique technical and creative backgrounds of the three collaborators.

Ana Topalovic will be in charge of combining the expressive range of her five-string electric cello, human voice, live electronics, and interactive technologies. Through techniques such as scripted looping, AI-driven improvisation, and movement-activated sensors (which can i.e. make it possible to generate sound through the movement of the dancers, making of the choreography a real time partiture), she will deconstruct traditional tango elements—melody, rhythm, and harmony—and reassemble them into innovative new compositions, just as the dancers will on a choreographic level.

These pieces will range from minimalist reinterpretations that honor tango's roots to experimental and futuristic soundscapes that push the genre's boundaries. Taking advantage of the electric cello's tonal versatility and its wide array of textures, Ana will engage in real-time interactions with the dancers, creating an evolving musical dialogue.
